Three weeks after their marriage, Charles and his wife immigrated on the 'Oaklands'. The vessel sailed from Plymouth on 9th June 1877 and arrived at Port Adelaide, the South Australian colony, on 9 September.

* Granted 2.5 week injury allowance@ 1 pound / week = 2/10/- dating from 16th May, he having taken out 11 days annual leave from 5th May. Absence was due to Thompson's injuring his ankle when replacing a broken timber on switches at Terowie. Absent 3/5 to 1/6/1904 inclusive.
* Resumed to former position as ganger in order to make room for district foreman, Davey, whose position as district foreman was abolished owing to the introduction of motorcycles into the system.
* Chas's next appointment was to permanent inspector and then he was later appointed to Superintendent, SAR. The position he retired from shortly before his death.
* Once he rose above the ranks his employment records became confidential and I could not access them.
* He did pretty well for a butcher from Cornwall.
