    • In the 1841 census, Barbara's age was given as 23 years old - this would indicate that she was born about 1818 but ages given on census forms are often approximations.

    Emigration 1838  [1
James made an application for assistance to emigrate with a wife and two daughters (age 29 months and 10 months) on 16 April 1838. The parents and two daughters arrived South Australia, aboard the Rajasthan, on the 16 Nov. 1838, from London.
Biography Notes Barbara Wilkie was born in Fife in 1815. In Kettle, Fife in 1833, she married James Watt who was a tailor. They had two daughters, Isabella (b 1835) and Susan (b 1837), before the family migrated in the 'Rajasthan' to South Australia in 1838.

In the 1841 census, Barbara and James where living in Currie Street, Adelaide with the two girls. Their third daughter, Maryann, was born later in 1841.

In the 1840s, Barbara and the three girls, moved to Woodside to be with Barbara's brother Robert (he had migrated about 1839). It seems that James did not move with them - it is unknown whether he had separated from the family, or if he had died. (We have no indications of what happened to him after the 1841 census.)

Some time later, Barbara had a new partner and future husband, William WHITFIELD and they had six children. It seems that Barbara and William were living together and had their first four children before being officially married. The most likely possibility is that James left, and until they could prove his death or seven years had elapsed, they were unable to marry.

At the time of the birth of their children in the 1850s, I believe William was a teacher at Balhannah. At some stage he became head teacher at Oakbank. He had various roles in the community and was well regarded. For some time, at Oakbank, he was responsible for registering births deaths and marriages in the area.

Barbara and William moved to Mannum in the 1870s. In 1878 he was the local court clerk there.

William died at Mannum on 8 January 1883. His death notice appeared in the 15 Jan 1883 Evening Journal. "At his residence, Mannum, William Whitfield 63 years, a colonist of 43 years. New Zealand papers please copy." One wonders whether William has relatives in New Zealand.

Barbara died at Mannum in 20 May 1888.
