  • Name Christian Christ'n CAMERON
    Born
    • Place of birth: Although we have not found an OPR for her birth, the OPR for her marriage has her 'in Achnacarry' which probably indicated that she was living in Achnacarry at the time of the wedding. Her parents eloped from Aberdeen to Achnacarry so it is likely that they did not have any children before they settled in Achnacarry.
(This note by Don Gordon on 7th July 2020)
    • Year of birth: Various genealogical websites including Family Search, WikiTree and MyHeritage have entries of years 1761 or 1765, without evidence.
Although the entries did not offer evidence, these years are reasonable because 1761 and 1765 would mean Christ'n would have been 26 or 22 years old when she gave birth to Christina in 1787.
Our research has indicated that Christ'n was born in 1771 because she was recorded as 40 years old when she was a witness in a court case in 1811. This would make her 16 years old when she gave birth to her daughter Christina.
See our research notes in D53 and D55 in SMALL PRINT on the homepage.
      Further evidence is welcome.

    • Christ'n could not be found on the 1841 census, so she might have died before this, perhaps many years before 1841.

    Mother Jane ROBERTSON
    Relationship -3063
Children of marriage Donald Cameron and Jane Robertson had at least two daughters - Christ'n and Jane. For Christ'n, this was sourced by John's memoirs. For Jane, it was sourced by the combination of the memoirs and her daughter's death record. We have not found the sisters' OPRs because all OPRs in the parish of Kilmallie prior to 1773 are missing. So we do not have their birthdates and birthplaces (but we assume Achnacarry).
Although there are no OPRs for these two sisters, there are nine OPR contenders for their siblings. All have their father as Donald MacMillan. Three have the mother Janet Robertson - born in 1762, 1765 & 1768 - all in Blair Athol. Six have the mother Janet (no surname) - in 1763, 1783, 1785, 1790, 1793 & 1796 - all born in Fortingall. Blair Athol is location 155 kms west of Aberdeen and 106 kms east of Achncarry. Fortingall is located 42 kms south of Blair Athol, 175 kms southwest of Aberdeen, and 122 southeast of Achnacarry. Blair Athol and Fortingall are too far from Aberdeen and Achnacarry to be compatible with where Donald and Jane met (Aberdeen) or where they lived in their married life (Achnacarry). We believe that Christ'n was born in 1771, so the births in the late 1760s are compatible with being her siblings, but the births in 1790s are improbable. Unless other corroborative details can be found, none of the nine appear to be part of this family. = DISCOUNTED.

Children of marriage It would be surprising if John and Christ'n only had only one child, Christina. In those times, there were often many children in each family.
There are no confirmed records of any of Christina's siblings. Several public genealogical websites have Catherine (born 1787), Margret (1789 or 1811) and Ewen (1791) - these have been entered without evidence and we have discounted them because there is no documentation specifying that the mother is Christ'n Cameron.

This extract has wonderful details about activities around Loch Arkaig. It includes some information about Achnacarry and Crieff which were two of the 38 farms that comprised the Lochiel Estate.
There is nothing specifically about Christ'n Cameron and John McPhee but it has general descriptions of the circumstances during their childhoods and their married life.

Christn was living in Achnacarry in the parish of Kilmallie. These research notes are based on the possibility that she might have been born in another parish, and that her mother was not known. After extensive research was completed, it was found that her mother was Jane Robertson, so all the initial research was on a false path - a wasted effort.

    D55 - John McPhee & Christ'n Cameron
    D55 - John McPhee & Christ'n Cameron
John McPhee was the last of a line of McPhee tenants of Crieff farm. Christ'n Cameron was probably born in 1771 in Achnacarry to parents Jane Robertson and Donald Cameron, the saw-miller. John and Christ'n were married in 1786 and their daughter, Christina, was born the next year. In 1788 John took over the Crieff tenancy after his father died. In 1804 they were evicted because of the clearances for farming sheep rather than cattle. They settled on the outskirts Fort William.

The OPR of their Kilmallie Parish marriage is attached to this profile.
It is difficult to read the date of the marriage on the OPR. Scotland's People have wrongly transcribed it as 28th Feb 1786. Maybe it is 1st March or 31st March. The important thing is that the year is definitely 1786. (This note was by Don Gordon on 26th Feb 2019.) I find that the date is 1st of March 1786, partly due to the faded ink and the refreshed ink writing. The year nor the location is in doubt 1786 in Kilmalllie Parish.(Note by researcher Lorna McLean on 3 March 2020).
