Cause of death Death from Pulmonary Apoplexy. - The Acting City Coroner held, on Friday week, at the Royal Hotel, Kent Town, an inquest upon the body of Robert Haldane, aged 48 years. Mr. J, C. Hamp represented the bereaved family. Joseph Gould said that on Wednesday evening, on returning to the Royal Hotel, he saw the deceased, who was apparently unwell, and under the influence of drink. Had him conveyed to a couch, and some time afterwards sent for his wife, who had him taken home. Dr. Ellison deposed having been called to see deceased, then in a state of collapse, at midnight on Wednesday. Prescribed for and again saw him at 8 o'clock the following morning, when he appeared rather better, but not conscious. On again calling at 11 o clock found him dead. As the result of a post-mortem examination, found the lungs greatly congested, and other organs unhealthy. Cause of death was pulmonary apoplexy. Eliza Ann Haldane, wife of deceased, said that when summoned to see her husband on Wednesday evening he was ill. Had him conveyed home, near by. When home he was partially conscious. In reply to my asking had anyone hurt him, he answered "Do you want to get any one into trouble!" Previous to this, last saw the deceased at 4 pm on Tuesday at home, when he went out. During that night he came in and asked for a light, when the girl told him where one was to be obtained. Believe he slept on the couch that night, but did not hear him when he left the house. Knew by his voice that he had been drinking. He was in the habit of doing so. Knew of no one having a down upon deceased. Martha Dawson, sister of the landlord of the Royal Hotel, said the deceased was at the hotel from 11 am to 7 pm on Wednesday, sitting in a chair, and apparently intoxicated. He obtained no refreshment of any kind at the hotel. No attempt was made to put him out. Dr. Ellison, recalled, stated that after hearing the evidence as to the deceased's habit of drinking, it probably caused the diseased conditions of the various organs, and consequently death. The Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, that the deceased died of pulmonary apoplexy.

The Sudden Death at Kent Town:
An enquiry into the cause of the death of Robert Haldane, who died at Vaughan's Mansion on Thursday, was conducted by the city coroner (Dr Whittell) at the Royal Hotel, Kent Town, on Friday, Mr J, G. Hamp represented the family of the deceased. Joseph G Mold stated that at 7 o'clock on Wednesday evening on coming home to dinner at the Royal Hotel he saw the deceased, and about three-quarters of an hour afterwards removed him to a couch as he was evidently unwell. After Haldane had lain there for some time witness took him outside, and as he did not appear to revive went to Vaughan's Mansion to tell Haldane's wife, and afterwards with others took him to that house. Witness judged that he was under the influence of drink at the time. Knew that Haldane was refused drink at the hotel at 8 o'clock on Thursday morning. Dr. Ellison said that shortly before midnight on Wednesday day he was called to see the deceased, who was then in a state of collapse. Prescribed for him and saw him again at about 8 o'clock on the following morning when he was somewhat more conscious, but he could get no rational answer from him. On calling again at 11 o'clock found that Haldane was dead. As the result of a post-mortem examination found that the cause of death was engorgement of the tissues of the lungs with blood, from which he had been suffering for only a few hours. Eliza Ann Haldane, wife of the deceased, stated that when she was called to see her husband, on Wednesday evening she noticed that he was ill and in a condition different from any in which she had ever observed him previously. Deceased was conscious at intervals after being removed to Vaughan's Mansion. He had been fairly well during the past three weeks. Last saw him alive at about 4 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, when he left his home quite well and sober. During the night heard someone go down the steps and speak. Knew from the voice that it was her husband, and that he had been drinking. Believed that he slept on the couch upstairs. Deceased drank badly. Asked her husband while conscious if anyone had hurt him. He answered, "Do you want to get anyone into trouble?" He also stated that he did not know what was the matter. Did not suspect anyone of having any spite towards her husband. Martha Dawkins, housekeeper of the Royal Hotel, stated that the deceased remained about the premises the whole of the day, sitting in a chair from 11 am to 7 pm, evidently the worse for drink. He received no liquor between those hours, and no attempt to put him out of the house was made. Dr Ellison stated that after hearing the evidence with respect to the habits of the deceased he was of opinion that they might have produced the disease which was the cause of death. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
