    • Born at Mangerton Farm, Newcastleton in Roxburghshire: A freeway in 2017 runs through the town which is situated between Newcastletown and the English border. (ref: page 1 in 'The John Inglis Story')

    John and Agnes, with their three youngest children (Jane, Gilbert & James) disembarked at Port Adelaide from the ship 'William Hammond' on 19th January 1854.
    John paid 2 pounds and 5 shillings for his passage.
    It is believed that another child, John Wilson, also was a traveller on the same ship but travelled on to disappear for all time in Fiji.
    Their oldest living child, Henry, arrived two years later (1856) aboard the 'Aliquis' which was a much larger vessel. 
    Biography Notes John's family history was written by Frank A Inglis of 9 Rosella St, Modbury Heights SA 5092. This might have been written in the 1990s. A copy of this book is in the McLean family history collection at the Strathalbyn Museum. (not yet)

    John was born in Roxburghshire and his brother, James, was from Fifeshire. They came out to South Australia 14 years apart and settled in areas not far from each other.

    Gilbert Valley varied from 10 to 15 kms in width and was unsurveyed. Each settlement had an area of 80 acres and John occupied three blocks which today are run by Jodlew Nominees.
    The land was mainly used for grazing sheep and pigs etc. In the early days no roads existed, fences were erected of stone gathered from the fields.
