On 26th July 1915 Jim, with his brother Syd, enlisted in the Australia Imperial Force in Liverpool, NSW, and became number 1580 Private JA Mott. He served overseas in Egypt with the 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment, 4th Field Troop, Australian Engineer's, and 2nd Field Squadron, Australian Engineers.
He was promoted to corporal.
He was discharged at Sydney on 3rd August 1919.
