    On 26th July 1915 Syd, with his brother Jim, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Liverpool, NSW. He became number 1579 Private SV Mott, and served in Egypt and France with the 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment and 2nd Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (which later became the Royal Australian Air Force).
    He was in the Battle of Cambrai in November & December 1917. From April 1918 they continued to attack the German lines until the armistice the following November.
    He was promoted to sergeant.
    Discharged at Sydney on 11th August 1919.
