Viv started as a watchmaker, then carpenter, then building contractor. He has worked on many large constructions in South Australia - Loveday International Camp near Barmera; Barmera picture theatre; Loxton Area School; Mount Bold Reservoir near Echunga; Housing Trust at Mt Compass, Mannum and Victor Harbor.
In 1973 during Viv's early retirement he helped construct one of the largest paddle-wheelers ever to ply the Murray River, the 'Murray River Queen'. (ref p84 in Rachel's section in the McDonald family history)
