- It is possible that Walter is related to Dr John Rankine who was born in Kirkintillock seven years earlier?
There are no indications of when (or if) Walter migrated to Australia or whether he spent time in Strathalbyn.
Nor are we even certain that Walter was the father of Matthew B Rankine.

- It has not been confirmed that this Walter Rankine who was buried in West Terrace in 1878, is the same person who was born in 1807 in Kirkintillock. Finding out the complete wording on the grave stone might help.
