Name |
Hugh Milne (Hughie) MCLEAN [1, 2, 3] |
- His name was written as 'Hugh M' on this birth record. Susan Nicholls looked through records of deaths and marriages of anyone called 'Hugh M McLean' but could not confirm whether it was the correct one. Fortunately on Hugh Milne's marriage details they included the father Robert Tannehill, hence Susan knew the 'M' stands for Milne. This of course meant it was more possible to trace his whereabouts and his children.

Nickname |
Hughie |
Born |
2 Oct 1893 |
Broken Hill NSW [1, 2, 4] |
- The BRB has the birth as 1903 whereas Susan Nicholls has it as 2nd Oct 1893 in Broken Hill. Alan Wilson has the birth certificate number 802 which supports this date and specifies the birth being in Oxide St, Broken Hill.

Gender |
Male |
Education |
27 Oct 1903 |
Strathalbyn SA [2] |
Hugh Milne enrolled at Strathalbyn primary school on 27 Oct 1903, his last school being Broken Hill. From this, one assumes the family were in Strathalbyn in October 1903 and had come directly from Broken Hill but his guardian name was given as Hugh Mclean, who is Roberts brother, so it may be that Hugh Milne, the son, was in Strathalbyn before his family.
He left school on 27 Nov 1909 because he was of the age limit. |
Biography Notes |
Notes from page 546 of BRB:-
Hughie Milne McLean born about 1903 [actually 2nd Sept 1893], registration not found [birth certificate number 802 found by Alan Wilson]. He became a metal presser [actually tailor/presser] at an Adelaide foundry and by 1934 was living at 174 Young Street, Parkside, SA. (near Adelaide). By 1952 when his niece Florence Potts boarded with him & his wife, so that she could attend high school at Adelaide to do her Leaving Honours year, the family was of 29 Dunks St Parkside. From Electoral Rolls Hughie's wife's Christian names were Jessie Pricilla surname not known [Jess Priscilla ROBERTS]. Both were still there in 1963. They had 2 children [Bob & Edith Mavis. Death dates not traced. [Hugh died 1st Jan 1970 and was buried at Centennial Park in Adelaide - cemetery plot certificate 18517]
NOTE: These notes were in the BRB in 1995. The corrections, which are in square brackets, were contributed by Alan Wilson in 2017. [1, 5] |
Cause of death |
Heart attack/stroke [5] |
Occupation |
Alan Wilson advised that Hugh was a tailor/presser - as evidenced by the photo of Hugh as an apprentice with NC Williams, tailor about 1910 and also his marriage certificate specifies presser.
However, about 20 years later, BRB has him as him as a metal presser based on the 1939, 1941 and 1943 electoral rolls.
We would need to look at the actual electoral rolls to check what they record, and then determine if the rolls are correct in whatever they have recorded. [1, 2] |

Sophie might not have been living with her parents just prior to getting married but the wedding was in her parent's home in Yatina. It may be that they travelled up to Yatina only for their wedding or may have travelled with the family.
It appears that Sophie and Robert travelled to Broken Hill shortly after, as they have two sons born in Broken Hill.
Then they travelled to Adelaide or directly to Strathalbyn. Their next children were born in Adelaide but it is not clear whether the family was living in Adelaide or maybe they were living in Strathalbyn but Sophie might have gone to her mother's house in Adelaide for the children's births.
Later the family moved to Langhorne Creek.
Sophie and Robert were both buried in West Terrace Cemetery because they were in Adelaide Hospital. [2] |
