In 1881 John junior had been very angry at damage done to the family property and was by then farming without his father. In the "Southern Argus" dated 5/7/1881 he published the following:- "Field View Lodge, July 5th. Take notice that on account of my fences being destroyed on or after this date ANY PERSON found trespassing on the undermentioned sections, Hundreds of Bremer and Strathalbyn, VIZ. 2773, 2761, pan 2762,2763, 2764, 2765, part 2760, 514, 508, part 2799, part 2774, part 2761, pan 1189, 1188, 1181, 1184, 1187, 2628 and 505, will be PROSECUTED. All horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, etc. will be IMPOUNDED."

CIVIC RECORD OF 1922: John Cheriton junior, born at Belvidere in 1854, son of the late John Cheriton of Strathalbyn who came to S.A. in early 1840's from Devonshire. For 68 years Mr Cheriton has resided at Belvidere and during that time has taken a prominent part in district affairs. 20 years Chairman of the Bremer District Council, also President of the Strathalbyn Agricultural Society, past President of the Strathalbyn institute and ex-member of the Australian Order of Forresters, Strathalbyn branch. In patriotic work Mr Cheriton has taken part and for a time of the local repatriation committee.

- DEATH: 3 days before his 86th birthday. He had retired to a suburb of Adelaide leaving his sons to continue the Belvidere farm.

An OBITUARY was printed in the "Southern Argus" of 21/8/1940:"The Death occurred at Fullarton on Monday of Mr John Cheriton, son of the late Mr J. Cheriton the well known auctioneer of Strathalbyn. More than 50 years ago Mr Cheriton took up land at Angas Plains where he farmed successfully until he retired in favour of his sons. There are four sons in the family - Mac., Gordon, Jack and Graham. Mac. and Gordon predeceased their father, the latter being killed in the Great War. There are also three daughters, Jean of Sydney, Maisie of Paris, and Mrs Shoebridge of Horsham, Victoria. The funeral was conducted yesterday afternoon. The Rev. Sydney Smith officiated at the graveside. John and Mildred are in grave 2/37 at the Strathalbyn Cemetery." |

- Jane aged 7 years when (1830-1886) the family left Scotland to arrive in SA by the "Navarino" on 6/12/1837. She is shown in the S.A. Census of 1841 as aged "under 14" and residing with her parents at Strathalbyn SA.
MARRIAGE: (possibly at Holy Trinity, Adelaide as her husband was English) to John Cheriton (b.1829 at Exeter Devonshire UK). John arrived in S.A. in 1848 by the ship "Spartan" when he was aged 19, so he and Jane were both very young when they married the following year.
