Cause of death |
The BRB p390 has "The general belief in the families was that Thomas was drowned in Lake Alexandrina, however the newspaper notice in the Adelaide 'Observer' reports that he died of pneumonia at Sliding Rock on 23rd Nov 1875"
Express and Telegraph (Adelaide), 3rd December 1875, p2 & SA Advertiser, 3rd December 1875, p4 - "DIED - LAIDLAW - On the 23rd November, at Sliding Rock, of bronchitis, Thomas Laidlaw, aged 69 years."
CONCLUSION (note by Don Gordon in Jan 2021): This person was not our Thomas who, according to his headstone, died at the age of 43 (not 69) years old on 7th Feb 1876 (not 3rd Dec 1875), probably at Lake Alexandrina which is 20 kms south of Strathalbyn (not Sliding Rock which is 450 kms north of Strathablyn). Thus the death in Sliding Rock in 1875 was a different Thomas - so maybe it was correct that he died in Lake Alexandrina, but this has not yet been corroborated.
