    Gender Male
Emigration In 1855, six Laidlaw children, Elizabeth, Janet Thomas, Robert, Walter and Margaret arrived in Melbourne on the Fulwood, and then embarked on the new steamer, the Havilah, to Adelaide.
They came as unassisted passengers so it would seem that Thomas Laidlaw Snr. was a man of means at that time and paid their fares.   [3

After arriving in Adelaide in 1855, the six children of Thomas snr lived at Watergate with him for several years and then went their own ways.
Watergate is a homestead situated nearby to Flaxley, Green Hills Range, and Macclesfield.
Cause of death 1876  Lake Alexandrina SA Find all individuals with events at this location  [4
The BRB p390 has "The general belief in the families was that Thomas was drowned in Lake Alexandrina, however the newspaper notice in the Adelaide 'Observer' reports that he died of pneumonia at Sliding Rock on 23rd Nov 1875" Express and Telegraph (Adelaide), 3rd December 1875, p2 & SA Advertiser, 3rd December 1875, p4 - "DIED - LAIDLAW - On the 23rd November, at Sliding Rock, of bronchitis, Thomas Laidlaw, aged 69 years."

CONCLUSION (note by Don Gordon in Nov 2022)
This was a mixup between two men named Thomas Laidlaw - father and son. It was the father who died of bronchitis in Sliding Rock in 1875, aged 69 years (the year and age are reported in the newspaper), whereas it was the son who drowned in Lake Alexandra in 1876 aged 43 years (the year and age are on his headstone).
Thus the father and son, of the same name, died in consecutive years (1875 & 1876), and the deaths occurred 470 kms apart (Lake Alexandrina is 20 kms south of Strathalbyn and Sliding Rock is 450 kms north of Strathablyn).
