Biography Notes |
JEMIMA MARION McLEAN, was the 11th child and 9th daughter of John and Mary McLean, born at "Waterloo" Angas Plains, on the 5th December, 1868.
After attending the Angas Plains Public School, Jemima lived at home for some years. The period from mid 1870's into the 1890's heralded a very busy domestic period on "Waterloo" as twin sons were born to John and Mary McLean in 1871, Mary died in 1872, and John McLean re-married in 1874 with another 3 children in the family by 1877.
In the meantime several of the older McLean girls had followed their elder sister, Christina, who had married George Harvey Sturgeon, to the Nhill district in Victoria.
MARRIAGE: Jemima Marion McLean was living with relatives at Lawloit, near Nhill, Victoria, on 3/2/1890 when she married Charles James Hine, 33 years of age, also of Lawloit.
She had only one child -Percy Angus Hine, born 25/9/1894, at "Waterloo" Angas Plains, via Strathalbyn, S.A. Subsequently Jemima moved to W.A.
Not a great deal is known of Jemima's subsequent life, except that she moved to W.A. with her husband, and in the mid 1930's was employed as a cook in a hotel at Kalgoorlie, earning £4/4/- per week. Up to this time she maintained contact with her younger brother, Edwin James McLean, of "Maplemore" Angas Plains, Strathalbyn.SA
Also about the mid-1930's Lorna Edith McLean, Edwin James (Ted) McLean's daughter, visited W.A. on holidays and visited a son of Jemima Hine, who then was residing in Perth.
In the mean-time Jemima Marion Hine had re-married to Michael Morris, a widower. They lived on the W.A. Gold Kookynie and Leonora.
Jemima Hine, later Morris, had a widely known reputation as a good cook, working in hotels at Kalgoorlie including the "lnland City Hotel" and at Leonora, being known for her "good scram".
In later life she and Michael moved to Perth. The authors father, Edwin McLean, in later life reminisced recalling growing up at "Waterloo" with her, saying how he'd "lost touch with her".
DEATH: of Jemima Marion Morris, aged 74 years, on 14th March, 1943, of Belmont, W.A. interred in the Presbyterian Cemetery of Karrakatta. W.A.
DEATH: Charles James Hine, late of Lawloit, Vic. died in Perth, W.A. in early 1900's - his death has not been traced. [1] |
