Biography Notes William Bacon Smith McLean, born 4/3/1882 at Milang, SA.

Child of the first 'marriage to Mary Frances Smith. When his mother died (1884) his grandmother Smith who was widowed, took him and brought him up in Adelaide from the age of 2 years.

Married: on 13/10/1914 to Margaret. No details regarding her single name and residence are available. There were no children of the marriage. Her death date is not known.

He was living with his wife, in company with Donald's second family at Murrayville in the early 1900's.

Subsequently William and his wife Margaret returned to Adelaide and resided at 44 Balfour Street, Prospect Gardens. William was Station Master of Adelaide Railway Station in the late thirties, early forties. The Donald Henry McLean family used to stay with William and Maggie when they came to Adelaide to play country cricket. They also visited them from time to time in the late fifties and early sixties.

On one visit to see Will however, they found someone painting his house so asked the neighbour what had happened. The story was not a good one - Will used to play cards with some of the neighbours each week, but on this occasion Maggie told them when they called that Will was sleeping and would not be playing. They thought nothing of it until the following week when they again called to play cards and Maggie gave them the same message. There was now a foul smell about the place so the neighbour called the Police who had to break in. Will had been dead for at least a week. Maggie was taken to Victoria by her relations and put in a home.  [1
