See biography of his mother, Agnes i-3128. John Herbert Thomas Sinclair Chaplin known as "Herbit" b. 11/6/1877 at "Waterloo", Angas Plains, was incorrectly named in the Will of his grandfather John McLean of "Waterloo Plains" as "Albert" and left 50 pounds ($100) in 1903.
MARRIAGE: "Herbit" married Blanche Clarissa May Cook (born c. 1883) at St. Paul's, Port Adelaide. The witnesses were J. J. Frost, labourer of Glanville and R. E. McLean of Semaphore, SA.

"Councillor John Herbert Chaplin, Member of the Goolwa Town Council, was born at Angas Plains near Milang, S.A. on June 10th, 1877 (registration 11th) being a son of Mr Thomas Chaplin and grandson of Mr John McLean of Angas Plains, one of the early pioneers of the Province, the subject of this notice was brought up to farming pursuits, but subsequently became identi with the river trade for nearly twelve months in partnership with Captain John Ritchie. He then established himself (in 1902) at Goolwa as a general storekeeper and carrier and now does the principle carrying trade between Goolwa and Adelaide. In 1904 Mr Chaplin was elected a Member of the 'Goolwa Town Council and has served the interests of the rate payers in that capacity ever since He is a member of the Masonic Fratemity (his mother Lodge being the Corinthian No. 34).
He was married on 25/8/1903 to a daughter of the late Mr William Cook, carpenter of Port Adelaide - Blanche Clarissa May Cook. They had a family of 3 boys and 3 girls." |

Pneumonic influenza and/or typhoid fever.DEATH: "Herbit" Chaplin contracted typhoid fever while constructing the Victor Harbor Reservoir. He died at the Royal Adelaide Hospital on 27/2/1917 aged 39 years leaving a young family. His wife Blanche moved to Port Adelaide and brought up her family there and supported them by having the job of cleaner of the Harbour's Board of of Blanche Chaplin on 25/9/1964 aged 81 years. |
