After farming on his own account for a few years at Belvidere, he sold the property Yanipy and came over to Victoria in 1873, when the land was thrown open for selection and he selected at Yanipy. In those days settlers had to cart their wheat and produce either to Dimboola or Custon, near the South Australian border, and on the return journey bring back the necessary provisions to last several months. He retained the farm that he selected until about 12 months before he passed away, when he sold out and went into Kaniva, where he lived a retired life. |

OBITUARY. ?:O:? RICHARD JONES. General regret was expressed on Sunday when it became known that Mr Richard Jones, a well-known identity of Kaniva, had passed away in his 70th year. About 12 months ago deceased had a paralytic stroke, from which he never properly recovered, although he was able to get about and enjoy life to a certain extent. The late Mr Jones was born in Hampshire, England, and came out to Australia with his parents when he was only 7 years of age. The family settled in the Strathalbyn district, where
they carried on farming pursuits. In 1869 he married the eldest daughter of the late Mr John McLean, a well known farmer at Angus Plains. After farming on his own account for a few years atBelvidere, he sold out and came over to Victoria in 1873, when the land was thrown open for selection and he selected at Yanipy. In those days settlers had to cart their wheat and produce either to Dimboola or
Custon, near the South Australian border, and on the return journey bring back the necessary provisions to last several months. He retained the farm that he selected until about 12 months ago, when he sold out and went into Kaniva, where he lived a retired life. He was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church, and by his kind and
cheerfui ways had won the esteem and affection of all who knew him, and during his life had done many acts of kindness both in action and deed for many people who were not so fortunate in life. He has several nieces and nephews in South and Western Australia, and Mrs Tom Warner, of Winiam, who nursed him during his sickness, is also a niece. Deceased had no children of his own, but Mrs John Spry, of Kaniva, is an adopted daughter. The remains were interred in the
Kaniva cemetery on Tuesday, the funeral being largely attended. Mr
Rae of the Kaniva Presbyterian Church, conducted the burial service.
