Biography Notes |
- Audrey May Sturtzel born 12/1/1907 at Bordertown, S.A.
Audrey, who was born in 1907, recalled "moving pictures" which were continuous of "News of the World" (in Rundle Street) - the "Pav" also in that street which cost 6 pence to enter (5 cents) - Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford of the long golden curls and her husband Douglas Fairbanks senior in silent film dramas. The Keystone Cops and also the serial such as Pearl White in the "Perils of Pauline" which this writer also recalls well and the pursuit by the villain and the "to be continued next week" caption at the most dramatic moment.
When W.W.1. commenced in 1914 Audrey was sent to the Bradleys at Kybybolite in the south-east, and she attended a one teacher school, one roomed too. She recalled a happy time with "Auntie Kitty" and her family. She remembers also, the wild rejoicings at Adelaide in 1918 when the war ended. She commented that Eva and her brothers had to walk two miles to school at Strathalbyn, that they were never bored and did their chores and made their own amusements in a time when T.V. and even radio had not been invented. Sometimes they were late for school and got into trouble even though they had been rescuing lost lambs and returning them to the mothers.

Child:
(1) Maureen Patricia Hickey D. 9/2/1929 at "Wendourie", Wayville, S.A. She married at Christ Church, C of E. South Yarra, Victoria, Gordon Edwards (b. 3/9/1929, Melbourne). She lived at Camberwell.
