Biography Notes |
"Rowland Nutt came out from England to try his luck at the Victorian gold rush and was one of the fortunates. He later settled at Yatina, where he built the Yatina Hotel in 1874, a well-known landmark on the Jamestown-Orroroo road. He also built stockyards at Yatina capable of holding 20,000 sheep, at which regular stock sales were held. In 1876 he purchased several blocks in the newly surveyed township of Orroroo and on the Wallaway plain. His three sons, George, John and Lloyd, all settled in the Orroroo district, and today (1975) some of the descendants still hold the original land. The firm of HL Nutt & Son became one the large pastoralist firms of South Australia."
(p66 in Nancy Parnell's book 'Orroroo', 1975) [2] |
Biography Notes |
Rowland Nutt and his family decided to move from Strathalbyn to the Orroroo District as pioneers of the district in the early 1870s, and he made a bold venture in building the Yatina Hotel South of Black Rock in the belief that the new railway line from Peterborough to Hawker would make a stop at Yatina. The railway line was rerouted to stop at Black Rock and the Yatina Hotel stood in isolation. At some stage Rowland?s son John became the licensee of the Yatina Hotel. [3] |
