 | TRANSCRIPT 1918 Letter from Sarah McLean (nee Thompson) to son Laurence....indicates (assuming) that:- (a) It might have been written in 1918, (b) Allan came home, probably by train, for just one night and had to leave again - presumably to return to where he was working, (c) Laurence was living, with his family, south of Tintinara, (d) Sarah was organizing to send a shovel to Laurence which he had been asking about. (e) Sarah was planning on going on the Express train next Sunday morning - perhaps to visit Laurence. TRANSCRIPT Sunday 9th/1918 Dear Laurie, Your father came home yesterday & went back this evening. I enquired the freight on shovel & it is one shilling by passenger & more by the goods train, so your father told me to send it so as we could not take it well in the Express as we are going by Express next Sunday morning all being well. I will send the shovel next Wednesday 12th by passenger train, will send it by goods to Tintinara then it will go on by passenger from there, so you can enquire for it on Thursday morning. If you do not get it then will you enquire on Saturday morning because if the Goods is late on Wednesday well I will send it Friday so you understand, I will book the guard the money and to pay for it, he will book it from Tintinara. What do you think of this card. Love from mother to all. |

 | MILITARY AWARD WWII PURPLE HEART AND COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE; Japan
Schwartz news article in New Guinea fighting situation ana conditions. Source email WAGS-SIGS convenor TRANSCRIPT War Department, Bureau of Public Relations, PRESS BRANCH, Tel. RE6700. Brs. 3425 and 4860 SIS Release SF 67 LETTER AS FOLLOWS:--Wearing the Purple Heart, a Distinguished Unit Badge and the Combat Infantryman Badge, awarded for exemplary conduct in action against the enemy, Private first class Theodore F Schwartz, 23, of 1718 Chestnut Street, Granite City, Illinois, has returned to the United States after 30 months in the SW Pacific. Private Schwartz, who was a rifleman in an assault company of the 32D Infantry Division, was wounded at Buna when a Japanese mortar shell struck only eight years from him, killing his buddy. “A piece of steel got me in the neck” the Illinois Infantryman said. ‘The shell’s concussion knocked by rifle out of my hand and hurled it several years away from me. I walked over and picked up my rifle and fired the rest of my ammunition at Jap snipers before I went to find a medical aid man to get my wound treated.” Expert medical attention rendered Private First Class Schwartz “as good as new” in a few days, he said. He returned to the front lines, where, near the climax of the Buna campaign, he had another narrow escape when he W.A. caught in an artillery barrage. “Shells kept ‘straddling’ me” he said. ‘First they’d hit on one side of me then on the other and I kept wondering when the Japs would zero in on me and blow me up. Its a funny thing. I had been scared a lot of times, and any solder who tells you that he never was scared is just kidding, but this time I wasn’t nervous. I just lay there in Kunai grass waiting, and then the barrage lifted and I found I was still all in one piece, I wasn’t even sweating.” Reticent about his own feats, Private Schwartz was eloquent in his comment on the heroism of his buddies.
“For instance” he said, “take a corporal in my platoon who wiped out a Jap machinegun nest with nothing but a rifle. He had used up all his grenades killing Japs trying to infiltrate into our lines, and when we were pinned down by the Nip machinegun, her charged it.” “It wasn’t a fanatical,… |

 | DENDEKKER PASSENDER IN ; Fatal Accident on Lincoln Highway Blackwood residents were shocked to hear of the death of Eddy den Dekker last Tuesday morning, 12th October, as a result of an accident. The car in which he was a passenger overturned on the Lincoln Highway, 25 miles south of Whyalla. Eddy came from Holland fourteen years ago and had lived most of that time in Belair and Blackwood, working for Mr. Dean Light, until recently. Those who knew Eddy know that he was a tremendous worker,w whatever job came his way was tackled with insight and energy. His latest venture was building an extensive pigeon loft from which he has been racing his pigeons. He was a member of the South Suburban Pigeon Club and his widow, Lorraine, is most grateful to those fellow members who have rallied around to help with the pigeons. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to Lorraine, their two children, Sharon and Dion; father, Mr. A. den Dekker of Belair and all the rest of his family and friends. | Allan McLean - baptism on 12th Feb 1811 in Blaich - parents Donald McLean and Christian McPhee "1811, Feb 12, Allan son to Donald McLean in Blaich & Christian McPhee in Blaich"
Seemingly the parish priest did 3 baptisms on 5th Feb and then Allen on 12th and not documented until AFTER the next baptism: where it was recalled that Allens record had not been entered. Hence it is squashed in between (though legible) in date order between the other baptisms.
One could almost see him resting in bed and settled down when he realises that Allens baptism had not been entered and the parish priest leapt out of bed/rest to scrawl in the entry with--in fact all the detail. Just as he had done just seven days prior with yet another child. |

 | Allan McLean - journey from Adelaide to Hobart on the Navarino in January 1838 - transcription of ship's manifest. On 6th Jan 1838 Allan embarked on the barque Navarino (6 mast, 2 gun, 464 ton) under Capt GS Warming, from St Vincent Gulf (near Adelaide) and disembarked on 12th Jan in Hobart (Van Dieman's Land) - a 6 day journey. The passengers were Mathew Flemmingham, D Huges, A McLean, P Gough & R Fitzsymmonds.
This was for purchasing seed wheat and other provisions. The details of his return journey are not known, but the family used the seeds for a 20 acre crop in Hilton (near Adelaide) in 1838 - the first wheat crop in South Australia.

 | Allan McLean - mortgages for loan - June 1877 - memorial 31, book 301 This memorial is transcribed in an appendix in the biography of Allan McLean and Catherine, nee Dawson. Allan borrowed 2000 pounds by mortgaging 17 of his properties. Nine months later, he auctioned off these properties. |
|
192 |
 | Allan McLean's properties - sec 35 - maybe in Koolunga or nearer Collinsfield These notes, by Maureen Edwards in 1994, were found with papers which had been gathered by Alfred McLean when he was compiling the BRB. Maureen's maiden name was Hickey and she was the 2 X great-grand-daughter of Catherine and Allan McLean. |

 | Ann MacMillan & David Smith - married 13th Dec 1827 in Glasgow 1827, Dec 13 - "David Smith Overseer at Achamore was married to Ann MacMillan at Glasgow"
It appears that the wedding was in Glasgow but the marriage was registered in the Parish of Gigha and Cara. David was overseer of the Achamore estate which is on the small island of Gigha, with the even smaller island of Cara close by. These islands are near the Campbelltown peninsular. There must have been compelling reasons for their wedding to take place so far from home because it would have been quite a journey in 1827 from the islands to Glasgow - 140 kms east, with at least three ferry crossings along the way.

 | Gavin Gemmel Rankine DUMBLEYUNG CEMETERY. Died 26th buried 27th Oct 1921Oct no relative mentioned no cause of death no headstone, 'fee paid'-no name. SOUTHERN ARGUS NOV 1921...Jottings...JOTTINGS,By J.W.E. A correspondent writing from Clare says: — "I noticed in your last issue reference to the death of Mr. Gavin Rankine, who, as all old residents of your district know, was the eldest son of the late Mr. Gemmell Rankine (a son of pioneer William Rankine, one of two founders of the town of Strathalbyn), and the announcement of the death reminded me of the fact that there are now living none of the original family, all of them having 'passed out', John of that ilk having been the last to succumb to the inevittable destiny of all of us. "The late Mr. Gemmell Rankine in his youthful days was one of the most popular of the family, and certainly the most jovial. The eldest son of the clan, Matthew, was always of somewhat austere nature on the surface, though really of kindliest disposition at heart; James was a fine character too, but a bit fiery; William and John were more retiring in type than any of their brothers, keeping themselves aloof a good deal from public or social matters; Andrew was in his youthful years a regular "good fellow" but even in his jolliest times a trifle hasty-tempered and apt to get misunderstood; but Gemmell never anybody's enemy but his own, was loved by all, and the wife he married won equal popularity and equal love from all classes of the community."It was Gemmell who was the 'pet lamb' of his parents and his uncle, Dr.Rankine; it was Gemmell who was the mischievous, happy-go-lucky young daredevil of the family; Gemmell who was the only one of the clan who lacked the 'austerity' of the 'severe Highland Presbyterians' from whom he sprang."Old William Rankine, though he must have 'frequent and oft' bemoaned his 'baby boy's' fallings away from grace, almost worshipped him, and when the time came for him to settle his affairs he showed that love by leaving the old homestead of Glenbar to young Gemmell, providing, however, in his 'canny Scot' way against alienation of it, the titles passing on at Gemmells death to his sons, Gavin,
Arthur, and Harry. That these lads were bound to under the will I lads were bound to under the will I don't know, but now that Gavin has gone it may be that the pioneer homestead will pass to another branch… |

COMMENTS (by Don Gordon in June 2021):-
* It seems that James was farming at North Balloch in 1839 when three sons and other relatives migrated on the Fairfield, but he later moved 7 kms to Barr where he died in 1850.
* Why isn't his wife, Jane (then 70 years old) included in this household in 1841 because she died in Barr in 1854?
* Who were James Rankine (aged 25 yrs) and Jane Rankine (30 yrs) - probably not his children (but where were their parents if they were his grandchildren?) |

* The various records are generally consistent, with minor differences except for two:- (1) Matthew's birth was recorded in the Biographical Index as 1846 whereas is was probably nearer 1836, and (2) Nancy Gemmell has Matthew's spouse as Maud, whereas all other sources has her name as Mary.

 | Sarah McLean - born 15th April 1834 in North Knapdale * "Sarah an illegitimate daughter of Allan McLean parish of Kilmaly and Catherine McLean in this parish Born 15th April 1834."
* Intriguingly, most entries on this page of the register have baptisms in December 1838 and January 1839 – with several other outliers apart from Sarah. Her placement on this particular page indicates that, at the beginning of 1839, a clerk had formalized the record of a birth almost five years previously.
* This registration might have been at the request of Catharine and the late registration was a deliberate act by her, after some forethought. But what prompted her to eventually get the birth recorded - almost two years after her complaint had been finalized, when Sarah was almost five years old, and after Allan had left the area and had been in Australia for two years.
* The clerk might have been relying on Catharine’s memory of the date, and the assertion that the birth was illegitimate, and that Allan was the father.
* It is recorded as a birth in this register of baptisms, so it appears that Sarah was not baptized when she was born, nor baptized much later. |

 | WW - Christian McLean in court for assault - 1855 South Australian Register, 21st Feb 1855, p3
LAW AND CRIMINAL COURTS - LOCAL COURTS, MOUNT BARKER: Wednesday, February 14, 1855 FULL JURISDICTION [Before Francis Davison, Esq., Stipendiary Magistrate; Robert Davennort and Frederick May, ESQS
Christian McLean, a septuageniarian wife of Donald McLean, appeared to answer the complaint of Annie MacBean and Catherine Macbean, of the same place for having violently assaulted them with a stick.
Mr Andrews defended; and in cross-examination elicited that one of the ladies was enciente by a son of the defendant, and the defendant on becoming aware of the fact ordered the frail one never to come on her premises again. That on the evening in question the lady did, in defiance of the defendant's injunctions, come on her premises.
The charge was, however, clearly proved, and the defendant was fined £2 and costs. |
