 | TRANSCRIPT 1918 Letter from Sarah McLean (nee Thompson) to son Laurence....indicates (assuming) that:- (a) It might have been written in 1918, (b) Allan came home, probably by train, for just one night and had to leave again - presumably to return to where he was working, (c) Laurence was living, with his family, south of Tintinara, (d) Sarah was organizing to send a shovel to Laurence which he had been asking about. (e) Sarah was planning on going on the Express train next Sunday morning - perhaps to visit Laurence. TRANSCRIPT Sunday 9th/1918 Dear Laurie, Your father came home yesterday & went back this evening. I enquired the freight on shovel & it is one shilling by passenger & more by the goods train, so your father told me to send it so as we could not take it well in the Express as we are going by Express next Sunday morning all being well. I will send the shovel next Wednesday 12th by passenger train, will send it by goods to Tintinara then it will go on by passenger from there, so you can enquire for it on Thursday morning. If you do not get it then will you enquire on Saturday morning because if the Goods is late on Wednesday well I will send it Friday so you understand, I will book the guard the money and to pay… |

 | 1953 FIRST TRUCK leaked gas and gassed Edwin on a trip. Almost fatal. On arrival home from shopping with 9month old first baby, Benjamin asked how did baby travel? Joan said slept all way there and back. Benjamin immediately grabbed infant and stripped him bare in the wind to get him to breathe fresh air. The vehicle he knew was leaking carbon monixide gas into the cabin from a rotting floor board. But Joan would not have noticed with her window open. The baby was resting/sleeping on the floor |

Brs. 3425 and 4860 SIS Release SF 67 LETTER AS FOLLOWS:--Wearing the Purple Heart, a Distinguished Unit Badge and the Combat Infantryman Badge, awarded for exemplary conduct in action against the enemy, Private first class Theodore F Schwartz, 23, of 1718 Chestnut Street, Granite City, Illinois, has returned to the United States after 30 months in the SW Pacific. Private Schwartz, who was a rifleman in an assault company of the 32D Infantry Division, was wounded at Buna when a Japanese mortar shell struck only eight years from him, killing his buddy. “A piece of steel got me in the neck” the Illinois Infantryman said. ‘The shell’s concussion knocked by rifle out of my hand and hurled it several years away from me. I walked over and picked up my rifle and fired the rest of my ammunition at Jap snipers before I went to find a medical aid man to get my wound treated.” Expert medical attention rendered Private First Class Schwartz “as good as new” in a few days, he said. | DENDEKKER PASSENDER IN ; Fatal Accident on Lincoln Highway Blackwood residents were shocked to hear of the death of Eddy den Dekker last Tuesday morning, 12th October, as a result of an accident. The car in which he was a passenger overturned on the Lincoln Highway, 25 miles south of Whyalla. Eddy came from Holland fourteen years ago and had lived most of that time in Belair and Blackwood, working for Mr. Dean Light, until recently. Those who knew Eddy know that he was a tremendous worker,w whatever job came his way was tackled with insight and energy. His latest venture was building an extensive pigeon loft from which he has been racing his pigeons. He was a member of the South Suburban Pigeon Club and his widow, Lorraine, is most grateful to those fellow members who have rallied around to help with the pigeons. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to Lorraine, their two children, Sharon and Dion; father, Mr. A. den Dekker of Belair and all the rest of his family and friends. |

 | 010 - 'A Brief History of the McLeans' by Trevor McLean This is an overview of the family history of Donald and Christina McLean. It touches on their life in Scotland, voyage to South Australia, growing wheat near Adelaide, and life around Strathalbyn. There are stories about the first generations in Australia.
This was an after-dinner speech at the McLean reunion in 1988 which was seven years before the 'History of Donald & Christina McLean and their descendants' (BRB) was published in 1995. Subsequent research has filled out some details, but the speech still serves as a good introduction to our family history.
The presenter, Trevor Donald McLean, is the 2 X great-grandson of Donald and Christina. His farm, 'Navarino', is close to Strathalbyn and his family represents the last McLeans in the district.

793 |
 | 0244 - Edward Abbott & Louise Alberta, nee Sturgeon This photo, from page 337 of the BRB, was labelled "Joe & Frances (nee McLean) Phillips" - but this is probably not correct.
MISTAKEN NAME?: Joe Phillips married Frances Agnes Sturgeon, not Frances McLean. There is a Frances McLean in the family tree (actually Elizabeth Frances McLean, known as Lizzie) and she happens to have been born in the same year and same place as Frances Agnes Sturgeon (actually Lizzie McLean was born on 3rd Sept 1876 in Angus Plains, and Frances Sturgeon was born on 1st May 1876 in Strathalbyn). However Lizzie McLean never married. The compiler of the BRB, Alf McLean was the nephew of Lizzie and he knew her personally so he would not have had her in mind for being married to Joe Phillips. To leave no doubt, Alf placed the photo on the same page as Frances Sturgeon's parents. Perhaps that is where the typo occurred because her mother was a McLean.
MISTAKEN IMAGE?: This photo does not look much like the other photos of Joseph Phillips. "He had a moustache all his life - except for a brief time in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields when he had a beard" (Ian Barnes email on 4th Jan 2021).
SOLUTION?: Maybe the BRB had incorrectly transposed two photos of two sisters - Louise Alberta (Berta) Sturgeon and… |
