Biography Notes 1928-1938  Strathalbyn SA Find all individuals with events at this location
FM=family memory of my father telling stories of his dad: Benjamin Ernest Parker was the gentleman who just prior to his lunchbreak one day immediately prior to the depression hit 'for real' noticed out of the upstairs (workplace) window; a gathering of large numbers of the public arriving and lining up at the bank downstairs from his working space (as a typesetter). Upon investigation he went down and drew out not some but all his savings (over 200 pounds)from the bank which closed the doors behind him as he left.
He was resented by the community thereafter; he was never called names to his face; but there were covert messages of resentment. And more so as the depression grew worse. At the same time there were grumblings that he should not be entitled to the government release of accumulating expenses for farmers (to keep the country running) when he started out with ALL his savings when everyone else was broke. Most everyone only took 'smaller' amounts out of the bank that fateful day.He immediately stopped driving his new Ford vehicle and began using the horses/carts because everyone was broke and didnt want to appear boastful.Dads story as I recall 2016.
