    George Sheridan was the son of Arthur and Margaret Sheridan (nee Munro) storekeepers of Belfast, Ireland.
    At about 25 years old, around 1855, he came to Australia and obtained work as a shepherd on Mt Rouse Station near Penshurst, Victoria.
    At South Hamilton on September 21, 1857, and according to the rites of the Presbyterian church, he was married to Christina McLean (nee McRae) a 22-year-old widow with one son. George signed his name, and Christina made her mark.
    They lived at Mt Rouse and had a family of seven; Alexander; Frank born in 1861; Donald, 1863; Patrick, born on St Patrick's Day; Jessie, 1867; George; and Margaret who was born in 1871 and died soon after birth.
    George Snr died of cancer of the tongue at Hamilton Hospital Vic on April 15, 1871, aged 41 years, and was buried in Cavendish cemetery.
    Christina was left destitute with a young family and had no option but to place Frank, Donald and Patrick in a Catholic Orphanage at Sunbury, Victoria. With the younger children she eventually went to live with her McRae relatives at Clear Lake south of Horsham Vic.
