    Biography Notes
    • The "Miss Jeffreys" who declared the Belvidere Bridge open in 1866 The eldest daughter in those days was always "Miss" without the Christian name.

From the "Southern Argus" dated 5/7/1877 (Henry aged 23 years.)

      "Belvidere Hotel - Belvidere.

Henry Lewis late of Strathalbyn begs to inform his numerous friends and the Public generally that he has taken the above well known hotel where his patrons will find their comfort and convenience studied in every possible way The accommodation will be found first class and the liquors of the very best quality only. The stabling will also be looked after and Henry Lewis hopes thus to secure a fair share of public support."

Henry held the licence of the Belvidere Hotel from 10/9/1877 to December 1879. His subsequent history is rather vague but next a Henry Lewis had the "Terminus Hotel" at 28 North Terrace, Adelaide 1883/84. ln 1909 Henry Lewis had the "Southern Cross" Hotel in King William Street, Adelaide and 1910/11 the Semaphore Hotel, Semaphore which agrees with the obituary of Ann Jeffreys in that her eldest daughter, Mrs Lewis, was of Semaphore in 1910 when Ann died.

Death: of Henry Lewis at Semaphore aged 59 years. Burial at the Cheltenham. S.A. Cemetery on 23/B/1911.

His wife Ann Jane Lewis (nee Jeffrey) outlived him by 25 years and was still residing at Semaphore South when she died and was interred with Henry on 25/12/1936 (Christmas Day). Her grave No. 28 is at Driveway A, Section F. at this cemetery.

Note: the Henry Lewis gazetted as holding the "Strathmore" Hotel on North Terrace. Adelaide from 13/12/1910 until 16/7/1944 is of another man of the same name.

There were no Lewis children so no descendants to follow up.
