| Biography Notes |
In 1919, they went to live in a house in Bagot Ave, Mile End, Adelaide. They called it 'Bringalbert'. They bought it off George Broadbent. George's son-in-law, Sinclair McLean, ended up owning this house - either by George leaving it as an inheritance to his daughter Stella (Sinclair's wife), or Sinclair purchased the property from George. |

* George applied for Crown Grants 111a and 320a (The Horsham Times, 26th February 1901, p3)
* George and Ellen selected at Bringalbert South (near Apsley) and farmed successfully until they retired in 1919 when they moved to Mile End
* In 1909, George was one of the speakers at the farewell of another pioneer of the district, William Ruth, who later compiled a history of Bringalbert South. (The Norsham Times - 3rd Sept 1909)
* In his later years he was virtually blind.
* Ellen moved to Tarragon Street (with Sinclair & Stella) after George died.

We think, but not have confirmed, that two brothers married two sisters.
* The first marriage was in Willunga in 1854 when John Matthews snr was 22 years old and Elizabeth Vinecombe was 33 years. This is a surprising 11 years difference.
* The other marriage, three and a half years later, was in Noarlunga in 1857 when George Matthews was 19 years old and Caroline Vinecombe was 17 yrs.
* Willunga and Noarlunga are 35 kms apart.
* The brothers were born 6 years apart - John Mathews was born in c1832 and George Matthews in c1838. However there is a big gap of 19 years with 'sisters' - Elizabeth Vinecombe was born c1821 and Caroline was c1840. Not impossible, but they might be cousins rather than sisters. This needs to be checked.
